How did you get into the industry?
Jake’s Sweet Shoppe was created as a value add to the existing customers of Jake’s Unlimited, a family entertainment center in Mesa, AZ. What began as a fun dessert experience quickly grew into a major profit center and a crowd favorite.
What’s New in the Business or in the Jake’s Sweet Shoppe Franchise Model?
We have upgraded the menu and product line to include baked goods and new dessert creations, private label soda, and our ice cream will now be churned at each location.
Where do you See Opportunities or Challenges for the Franchise/Business Moving Forward?
The biggest opportunity for the franchise will be scaling operations to meet the demand. We have worked diligently to understand and prepare for the scope of new business and are in a great position to meet the challenge head on with our franchisee partners.
What is your Goal for the Business Moving Forward?
Our goal is measured and sustainable growth, while we effectively market Jake’s Sweet Shoppe as a national brand.
Talk to us About Training and Support, How Do You Deliver?
Our training and support is top notch. The foundation of every great national brand is consistency in delivery of goods. Our training is thorough and ongoing to build that foundation from day one. We will train both in our corporate location as well as in the franchisee’s facility. The level of ongoing support post opening is second to none. Our franchisees will be connected to us and there will be constant communication.
Your most difficult moment in the Franchise Business?
The most difficult moment for us was in making the decision to open our concept to franchising. Jake’s Sweet Shoppe is our creation and we are very proud of it. We initially were going to grow the brand privately, but the benefits of franchising won out in the end. Now our team is committed to the success of each franchisee as if it were our own store.
Define the Jake’s Sweet Shoppe Franchise Model:
A. Training and Support Model? We are with the franchisee every step of the way. There will be one week of on site training at our corporate location in Mesa, Arizona followed by one with of training at the franchisee location prior to and during the grand opening.
B. What is the Fee Structure? Our current franchise fee is $35,000. The ongoing royalties are 6% of gross revenues and the marketing fund is 1% of gross revenues.
C. Territory Definition? Territories will differ from location to location to ensure our franchisees have the opportunity to capitalize on both a radius and anticipated population base in the correct demographic areas.
What does Your Franchisee Do in the Business Every Day?
There are several different levels of involvement for our franchisees. Some franchisees prefer to own the business and oversee it through a hired manager. Others want to be involved down to crafting the desserts and seeing the smiles they create. We welcome and will support all levels of involvement.
Who is the Ideal Franchise Candidate?
If you’re passionate about sweets, committed to quality and customer service, and have an entrepreneurial spirit, then we want to hear from you. Our franchisees come from all walks of life, and no prior experience in the food industry is necessary. We provide all the training and support you need to run a successful Jake’s Sweet Shoppe franchise.
Success Stories and Failures with Franchisees?
The successes continue to pile up as we grow and expand. Our desserts have been featured on some of the top internet sites (Thrillist, Buzz Feed, etc.). As far as failure – definitely the dessert nachos. We created a realistic looking dessert called “Nacho average dessert”. They were delicious, but looked very close to traditional nachos.
What Goals Do You Have for the Jake’s Sweet Shoppe Franchise Model in the Future?
Our long-term goals include rapid growth and expansion through the United State and eventually internationally. We also will continue to innovate our creations and menu items to remain cutting edge and award winning.
