How did you get into the blinds and drapes industry?
Nine years ago, I embarked on a transformative journey that led me from Quebec to Florida. Initially involved in residential construction, I recognized the immense potential in the window treatment industry after completing several home projects. Motivated by this realization, I made the bold decision to transition from construction to entrepreneurship, laying the foundation for what would become Shoppers Drapes & Blinds in Boynton Beach, Florida.
What’s New in the Business or in the Franchise Model?
Over the years, our business has undergone significant transformation, transitioning from traditional carbon copy contracts to digital agreements. Recognizing the need for a comprehensive paperless system, especially with the launch of our franchise model, I was adamant about implementing a robust digital operating platform. Through a strategic partnership with a leading window coverings CRM software company, we’ve seamlessly integrated our operations across all departments. This ensures efficiency and adaptability, with our software system continuously updated to reflect changes in products and prices over time.
Where do you See Opportunities or Challenges for the Franchise/Business Moving Forward?
I am incredibly optimistic about the opportunities that lie ahead! There’s a wealth of potential waiting to be tapped into, particularly right here in Florida, where we’ve chosen to concentrate our efforts to support our initial franchises. As the Sunshine State continues to attract a growing population, coupled with a housing shortage, the demand for window treatments remains constant. With an average lifespan of 8 years, blinds are a necessity for every home, whether new or old. Our primary challenge is identifying the ideal candidate(s) who possess the qualities necessary to own and operate a franchise territory.
What is your Goal for the Shoppers Business Moving Forward?
Moving forward, our goal for the business is threefold. Firstly, we aim to sustain our proven and successful business model, ensuring its continued effectiveness. Secondly, we intend to concentrate on rewarding franchises locally within the state of Florida, leveraging the opportunities present in this thriving market. Finally, we aspire to expand our operations nationwide, capitalizing on our established success and extending our reach across the country.
Talk to us About Training and Support, How Do You Deliver?
Training is pivotal in ensuring the success of our franchisees. Each franchisee is required to complete a minimum of 3 weeks of training at our headquarters in Boynton Beach. During this time, candidates will gain comprehensive knowledge of our products and daily operations. Additionally, they will receive field training alongside our sales staff and installers, providing invaluable firsthand experience in customer interactions and installations. Moreover, our franchisees benefit from ongoing business and marketing guidance, as well as continuous software support to aid in their operations.
Your most difficult moment at the Franchise Business?
I would describe the most challenging aspect of the business was transitioning away from day-to-day operations. It took several years to source reliable and trustworthy staff that would allow me to step away from daily operations. With more free time available, I’ve been able to redirect my efforts towards developing the franchise business model.
Define your Franchise Model:
A. Training and Support Model?
The mandatory initial training spans three weeks at our Boynton Beach, FL headquarters, encompassing comprehensive instruction in all facets of the business: product knowledge, sales techniques, operational procedures, CRM utilization, and installation methods. Should our franchisees require additional training, they are encouraged to extend their stay. We aid franchisees in securing a physical location, offer assistance in showroom planning and design, and continue to provide ongoing support post-launch, including CRM assistance, marketing guidance, and business management counsel.
B. What is the Fee Structure?
Our franchise royalties are exceptionally low, set at only 5.5% of gross sales. This fee is paid out upon completion of each project, providing our franchisees with increased financial flexibility to manage their business operations more effectively.
C. Territory Definition?
Currently, our primary focus is on granting franchise territories exclusively within Florida. Limited to just 34 territories statewide, each territory is strategically designed to encompass either an entire county or a population of approximately 500,000 in population. Our approach prioritizes the success of our franchisees by providing ample territory size without saturating the market with numerous locations.
D. Day in the life of a Franchisee?
Our franchisees are anticipated to oversee all aspects of their business operations daily, from sales to operations and installations. The flexibility of the business hours is a notable advantage. With most stores open six days a week during standard business hours, owners have the opportunity to delegate responsibilities once they have assembled an efficient team, allowing them to step back and appreciate the fruits of their labor.
What does Your Franchisee Do in the Business Every Day?
Franchisees begin their day at the store, overseeing all operations, including managing leads, products, and walk-ins. Throughout the day, salespeople conduct in-home consultations, while installers are deployed to install sold products. Franchisees have the flexibility to focus on the aspect of the business where they feel most productive. Additionally, typical back-end tasks such as payables, payroll, accounting, and marketing are also managed as part of daily operations.
Who is the Ideal Franchise Candidate?
This isn’t a passive investment, particularly in the initial years. We anticipate our franchisees to be actively engaged in day-to-day operations. Our preferred candidates are couples, professionals, or family-owned entities seeking entrepreneurial autonomy. They should be comfortable with hands-on tasks, unafraid to use tools, and willing to climb ladders if needed.
Success Stories and Failures with Franchisees?
As we’re in the early stages of our franchise rollout, we don’t yet have specific success stories from franchisees to share. However, we can attest to the success of our corporate store, which has operated successfully for over nine years. Our store has established partnerships with four Costco warehouses, and we continue to expand our network of designers and contractors who provide us continuous leads.
What Goals Do You Have for the Franchise Model in the Future?
